Week 2 Real Life Examples

In this email example, the commander of our Maintenance Squadron is reaching out to me to see if we could help them. My organization has several decommissioned aircraft that we use for targets on our Range. The commander, Major Sturick, wanted to know if we had any that his fabricators could use for training in completing structural repairs on aircraft. He looped all of the stakeholders in on the original email, and then indicated that I could work with his shop supervisor to arrange the logistics. Upon my reply, I included the commander so that he was aware that this was being actioned. I did not solicit, nor expect, a reply from him. I will admit, I was amused at his use of my rank and last name. Major Sturick and I have known each other for over 25 years. Despite this, our habit of keeping our communications formal is deeply rooted. However, he did remove some of the formality as the email progressed. He used the first name of his Fabrication shop's supervisor, and then signed it "Maj". These are all small nuances that those unfamiliar with the military would not pick up on.

In this is a communication from a chat session in Microsoft Teams. It is between myself and our administrative specialist from our Commander's Support Staff. We are working on a promotion package for one of my Vehicle Maintenance folks. This promotion requires am administrative package that must be sent to our headquarters and filed in a specific manner with specific forms. Normally, this would not be an issue for her, but our headquarters personnel recently changed the entire process and created several new forms. This required collaboration with both our headquarters and other units in the state that have already completed this process. At the time of this chat session both of us had become extremely frustrated. Sensing her frustration, I decided to keep our chat somewhat informal to help ease her stress. (a "read-the-room" moment) I even used an eye-roll emoji as a way to graphically show I was on her side and supporting her. Some may find it humorous, but she was chatting with me from her desk that is less than 20 feet from my office door.
